Elder Construction completes building remodel and athletic field for the expansion of Atlas Preparatory School in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs, Colorado – October 15, 2012

Atlas Preparatory School prides itself in bringing disciplined, challenging, and classical educational opportunities to the core of the Colorado Springs community.  Its growth required more space.  Atlas contracted with Elder Construction to provide a design-build team to help it grow.  Elder’s team helped to review and analyze the purchase of the adjacent office/warehouse building to allow for classroom and activities area needs.  The team also reviewed alternate sites for play area and athletic fields.

Atlas committed to the purchase of the building and land and Elder’s team moved forward to complete the changes.  The building’s project scope included select interior demolition of the building, new windows and accessible entries with new exterior paint, new interior walls and finishes compromising new classrooms and a new multi-use room.  The budget required re-use of many of the old building materials, including frames, doors, and ceiling tile.  Both the budget and the schedule were aggressive, but the dedicated team of subcontractors found the solutions necessary to bring everything together in the building.

The scope for the field included site clearing and re-grading to provide drainage channels and detention area.  Atlas worked with Colorado College (CC) to re-use it’s old artificial turf athletic field, which was re-installed in it’s new location at Atlas.  CC also donated the goal posts and a host of other athletic equipment.  The new field allows the student’s physical education activities to move from the asphalt parking lot to a beautiful almost-new low maintenance and environmentally friendly artificial turf play area.

The Project Team Included:

  • Architect: Paulson Architects PC
  • Engineer: Sol Chavez & Associates PE
  • Project Manager: Eric Swanson
  • Superintendent: Jim Howard / Rob Badger
